Women’s rights organisations submit proposal to constitutional committee

In coordination with other women’s rights organisations, the Egyptian Center for Women's Rights on Monday submitted a proposal to the constitutional committee which outlined basic principles needed to safeguard women's rights in the new constitution.

These principles include the criminalization of violence and an end to discrimination against women.

Women's rights organisations and initiatives have called for the inclusion of articles that outline procedures to be adopted by the government to emphasize equality between men and women and to ensure women's reproductive health as well as women's rights to shelter.

The National Council for Women (NCW) had earlier called for writing a new constitution that suits the current political scene instead of merely amending the suspended one.

The NCW called on the state to respect signed international agreements and to allocate a quota for women in parliament, saying that this is the only guarantee that women would be adequately represented in parliament.
