Sisi: Cairo to continue political coordination with Dakar on peace, security

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Friday said Cairo is keen on continuing political coordination with Dakar in the files of peace and security in Africa, lauding the key role played by Senegal in this regard.

During his talks with Senegalese President Macky Sall, the Egyptian leader expressed his country’s appreciation of brotherly relations with Senegal at the different political, cultural and religious levels, as well as the convergence of views between the two countries with regard to various regional and international issues.

Egypt pays great attention to backing development efforts in the West African country, through providing technical support and capacity-building programs to qualify Senegalese cadres, President Sisi added.

President Sisi told his Senegalese counterpart that Cairo is highly interested in boosting the volume of trade exchange and joint investments, besides strengthening the Egyptian business sector’s role in the Senegalese market over the coming period, especially in the areas of basic infrastructure, agriculture, health, science, culture, oil, natural gas and information technology.

At the beginning of their talks, held at the presidential palace in Dakar, President Sall welcomed President Sisi and hailed Egypt’s prominent role in defending African issues in the international arena and addressing African peoples’ problems, notably those related to the files of peace, security and development, Presidential Spokesman Bassam Radi said.

The Senegalese leader expressed hope that Cairo will endeavor during its presidency of the African Union for 2019, to improve credit-rating of African states in investment risk indexes within international development agencies, the spokesman added.

Moreover, the Senegalese leader lauded the deeply-rooted ties between the two countries, asserting the necessity of developing bilateral cooperation in the economic and trade fields, as well as the possibility of making good use of Egypt’s expertise in the infrastructure, new cities, roads, energy and tourism projects, the spokesman noted.

For his part, President Sisi expressed happiness about his visit to Senegal, congratulating President Sall on his re-election for a second-term in office, the spokesman noted.

The two sides called for boosting bilateral cooperation in the security sphere and information exchange, with the aim of countering terrorism and the extremist thought in the African continent, which in turn could help achieve the desirable security and stability, especially in the Sahel and West Africa regions, the spokesman said.

The two leaders touched on a number of regional issues of common interest, a top of which is the latest developments in conflict zones in Africa, in addition to discussing the possibility for enhancing the role of the African Union, by introducing financial and institutional reforms.

While witnessing the signing of two memorandums of understanding in the fields of media and diplomatic consultation, the two leaders agreed on the necessity of holding the joint Egyptian-Senegalese committee as soon as possible in Dakar.
