Shoukry receives UN New Special Envoy to Syria

On January 27, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen to discuss the latest developments on the Syrian stage, exchange views on means to advance the political process, and dealing with humanitarian challenges there, in addition to counter terrorism efforts, including ensuring that no foreign combatants or extremist, terrorist elements sneak out of their concentrated positions to the rest of Syria and in states across the region .

Official MFA Spokesperson Counselor Ahmed Hafez stated that the new Special Envoy was keen to include Egypt at the forefront of states he is consulting with on the Syrian issue following assuming his position recently. He was, also, keen to listen to Cairo’s vision on moving forward the political process to resolve the crisis; especially, in light of Egypt’s balanced position, which aims to restore the unity and stability of Syria and the security of its territories .

Couns. Hafez explained that during the meeting, FM Shoukry surveyed the determinants of the Egyptian position toward the Syrian crisis. The Foreign Minister noted the importance of working on breaking the current stalemate plaguing the political process and reaching a political solution that would achieve the aspirations of the Syrian people, based upon UNSC Resolution No. 2254 and away from any foreign interferences that aim to undermine Syria’s stability. This must come in parallel with advancing efforts to combat terrorist and extremist groups in Syria. Shoukry, also, mentioned the need to pay the necessary international attention to dealing with humanitarian challenges in many Syrian areas. These steps would hasten the ending of the crisis and putting an end to the suffering of the brotherly people of Syria .

Couns. Hafez concluded by saying that for his part, the Special Envoy appreciated his visit to Cairo and the exchange of views with FM Shoukry on the future of the Syrian crisis resolution. He expressed his aspiration to continue coordinating and consulting with Egypt in this regard during the upcoming period.
