Shoukry meets Russian President’s Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa

On January 29, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, the Russian President’s Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa, during his current visit to Cairo in the framework of continued consultation between the two countries on overall developments in the region .

Official MFA Spokesperson, Counselor Ahmed Hafez, stated that FM Shoukry and Deputy FM Bogdanov exchanged views on developments in regional issues including the Syrian crisis and developments in Libya. In this regard, Minister Shoukry emphasized Egypt’s fundamentals in dealing with the various challenges the region is witnessing, at the forefront of which is exerting all efforts to maintain the unity, sovereignty, and independence of Arab countries and the security of their territories, in addition to advancing political solutions to resolve crises in the region, as there are no military solutions to these crises .

The Official Spokesperson added that a discussion was, also, held about the Palestinian issue and developments on the scene. FM Shoukry stressed the need to achieve Palestinian national reconciliation and to continue the Egyptian efforts in this direction. In response, Special Representative Bogdanov emphasized Russia’s complete support of Egyptian efforts, and that any Russian movements in the Palestinian issue is in complementarity with efforts exerted by Egypt.

Supporting the rights of the Palestinian people was emphasized, as well as, continuing efforts that aim to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution, given that it is the main pillar of achieving peace and stability in the entire region .

The Official Spokesperson concluded his statements by saying that, for his part, the Russian President’s Special Representative commended the Egyptian role in supporting efforts to achieve regional stability and confront destabilizing factors. He expressed his aspiration to continue consulting and coordinating with Egypt in the upcoming period .
