Shoukry heads to Addis Ababa to participate in the AU Summit preparatory meetings

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will head to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on February 4, 2019, to take part in the preparatory meetings of the 32nd African Union Summit slated to be held from January 15 to February 8, 2019. He will participate in the meetings of the ministerial committees scheduled on February 6, to be followed by the 34th ordinary session of the Executive Council at the level of Foreign Ministers on February 7 and 8, and then by the 32nd Ordinary Session of the AU Summit of Heads of States and Governments on February 10 and 11, 2019.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Counselor Ahmed Hafez said that the AU summit is of significant importance, as Egypt will assume the chairmanship of the African Union in 2019, adding that Egypt will work with its African brothers on achieving several priorities, most notably economic and regional integration, economic and social development, peace and security, institutional and financial reform of the Union, and building bridges of cultural and civilizational communication among African peoples, as well as cooperating with Africa’s partners.

Hafez added that Minister Shoukry will head Egypt’s delegation during the AU ministerial committee meetings, which will examine a number of reports submitted to the Executive Council. The Foreign Minister will also chair the Egyptian delegation during the meetings of the AU Executive Council, during which a number of issues will be discussed, mainly the activities of the African Union and its organs, and the humanitarian situation in Africa, among other topics.

Hafez concluded his remarks by noting that Minister Shoukry will also hold bilateral talks with his African counterparts on the sidelines of the meetings to discuss bilateral cooperation and African issues of mutual concern.
