Rwanda/Egypt: AFCON U20 – Junior Wasps Face Uphill Task in Egypt

‘Junior Wasps’ face an uphill task going into the return leg of the second round of the U-20 AFCON Zambia 2017 qualifiers after losing 1-0 to Egypt in the first leg at Kigali Regional Stadium.

The goal came in 50th minute through striker Ahmed Mohamed Taher.

Rwanda started strongly looking for goal, but failed to penetrate the sold Egyptian defense. Egypt looked better in pressing and passing, but Aimable Nsabimana and Patrick Ndikumana defended well.

Egypt captain Ramadan Sohhi came close to making it two goals after going past Jean Paul Ahoyikuye but he failed to hit the target. Egypt dominated the game but failed to convert the several scoring opportunities that came their way.

Close attempts by forwards, Ahmed Mohamed and Ramadan Sohhi were kept at bay by Rwandan goalie Bonheur Hategekimana. On another occasion Mohamed’s shot hit the post after a good cross from Ragan Omar Mohamed.

Junior Wasps captain Savio Dominique Nshuti and Djaber Manishimwe had two chances but their shots went wide.

Following the loss, Rwanda will need to prepare well for the second leg, if the Junior Wasps are to qualify for the final.

The winner over two legs will face the winner between Angola and Gabon.

Rwanda reached the second round following CAF’s decision to disqualify first round winners Uganda over irregularities.

The Junior Wasps shared the spoils with Uganda in a1-1 draw in the first leg in Kigali but lost to the Hippos 2-1 in Kampala henceforth losing the tie 3-2 on aggregate.
