Palestinian President Arrives in Cairo Today

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will meet Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi during his three-day visit to Cairo, due to begin on Saturday.

Abbas will meet with Sisi at the Ittihadiya presidential palace on Sunday, reported Ma’an news agency. Afterwards, the Palestinian president is scheduled to attend the 142 Arab League Foreign Ministers’ meeting.

The meeting will include a special session on Palestine, prepared upon the request of AL Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi. During the session, Abbas is expected to brief the attendants about the latest updates in the Gaza strip following the Israeli offensive which started on July 8 and lasted for 50 days, reported Ma’an. He will also discuss the coming steps that the Palestinian authorities will adopt to end the Israeli occupation.

Egypt announced on August 26 reaching a ceasefire agreement within the Gaza strip, ending a war that has left 2139 Palestinians killed and over 11,100 injured. On the Israeli side sixty-four soldiers and six civilians were killed.

Indirect negotiations between both parties, sponsored by Cairo, are scheduled resume within a month after the start of the new ceasefire, as per the agreement.
