The Ministry of Interior announced a major restructuring in a press conference on Monday.

This year’s move is the third biggest reshuffle in the history of the bureau, raising questions over the ministry’s security concerns.

The press conference was conducted by Major General Magdy Ghanem, who explained that ”since January… all levels of the ministry contributed in the efforts of conducting this reshuffle based on the orders of the minister Major General Mohamed Ibrahim.”

The move involved 3744 of the ministry’s personnel.

He said the restructuring aimed to reinforce national security, security directorates and critical locations.

The spokesperson explained that the promotion of officers occurred taking into account their leadership skills as well as other factors, “per the needs of the officers in terms of family, health or geographical location.”

He identified Sinai as an important area which would be targeted with more resources.

Regarding officers who have been suspended for wearing beards for religious reasons, the spokesman said:  “Four of the officers shaved their beards and returned to full duties… the ministry does not abandon its children.”
