The navigation movement in the Suez Canal hit a record high in terms of the number of ships transiting the international waterway and the size of their loads, Head of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Mohab Mamish said.

In a statement on Wednesday, Mamish added that 68 ships transited the waterway carrying 5.3 million tons on board.

Mamish pointed out that 27 vessels crossed the canal as part of the north-bound convoy with a cargo of 2.1 million tons, while the south-bound convoy included 41 ships carrying 3.2 million tons on board.

Eleven giant ships crossed the canal as well with total cargo exceeding 150,000 tons for each, Mamish noted.
