Malawi: Sports and Culture Minister Inaugurates 2nd Egypt Cultural Week

Sports and Culture Minister Grace Obama Chiumia has said culture can be a great tool for promoting economic development for Malawi’s growing youth population.

Chiumia, Wednesday night inaugurated an art exhibition as part of the second Egypt cultural week in Lilongwe with the call of promoting culture to enhance interaction and economic growth between Malawi and its development partners,

She said the cultural week had come at an opportune time for Malawi as the government is emphasizing promoting of culture especially through the youth, some of which showcased their creativity with arts exhibition at the event.

“We have a lot of young Malawian artists who are promoting our culture through paintings. This cultural week is a great opportunity for them to interact with their Egyptian counterparts.

“As government, we are looking to find international markets so that these talented youth can make a good living from their art skills,” she said.

In his remarks, Maher El-Adawy, Egyptian Ambassador to Malawi said the cultural week has brought more understanding of the Egyptian culture among Malawians.

He expressed hope that the cooperation between Malawi and his country in the field cultural can extend further with a visit of a Malawian cultural troupe to Egypt where people can also learn about Malawian culture.

This year cultural week coincides with the 60th anniversary of China-Africa relations which started when China and Egypt established diplomatic relations and now many African countries including Malawi have diplomatic relations with the Chinese.

Chinese ambassador to Malawi Shi-Ting Wang said his country values people to people contact hence Malawi has been able to benefit through the construction of parliament building and new stadium among other while on the other hand many African countries assisted China when it was hit by earthquake few years ago.

African Union Regional delegate to Southern Africa, Dr. Leopold Auguste Ngomo underscored Wang’s remarks saying growth in infrastructure and trade on the continent is testament to how Africa-China relations continue to bear fruits every day.

He said China has provided technology and knowledge in various sector like trade and culture hence bringing people together to share traditions and experiences.

Among other activities in the cultural are performances by the Malawi national cultural troupe and the visiting Aswan Cultural troupe from Egypt.
