Housing min. hails strong partnership with UN-Habitat

Housing Minister Assem el Gazzar has hailed the strong partnership between the Egyptian government and the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat).

He made the remarks during the opening of a new headquarters of the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States and the UN Habitat Egypt Office.

Accompanied by Zena Ali Ahmad, the Arab Region Director for UN-Habitat and Rania Hedeya, UN Habitat Egypt office program manager, the housing minister said the Egyptian government has supported the program since the convocation of United Nations Conference on Sustainable Housing and Urban Development hosted by Ecuador in 2016.

In this regard, he pointed out that Egypt, along with other UN member states, approved the new urban plan, which calls for states to produce a paradigm shift in cities’ planning and management.

For her part, the Arab Region Director for UN-Habitat expressed her appreciation of the Egyptian government’s support for the UN Human Settlements Program, which was established in Cairo in 2011.

The program is responsible for offering advice in the field of urban policies, technical cooperation and capacity building in Arab states, as well as the provision of tools and support for Arab regional mechanisms to coordinate cooperation in the areas of urban development and housing.

On her part, the UN Habitat Egypt office program manager said the UN Human Settlements Program contributed to establishing strong partnerships with the Egyptian government, civil society, and multi-stakeholder groups.
