German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle arrived in Cairo on Wednesday, but was not granted a request to meet ousted president Mohamed Morsi.

Al-Ahram reported that Westerwelle had received “no response from the Egyptian presidency” regarding his request to meet with the ousted president.

High Representative for Foreign Affairs at the European Union, Catherine Ashton, met with Morsi on Monday evening, confirming that he was “well” and has “access to television and newspapers”.

The German embassy was unavailable for comment, but armed forces spokesman Colonel Ahmed Ali told Daily News Egypt that the decision not to allow the meeting was not made by the armed forces, but rather was taken at a political or judicial level.
