Interim Minister of Foreign Affairs Nabil Fahmy assured his German counterpart of the interim government’s commitment to implementing the transitional roadmap, following the ouster of Mohamed Morsi as president of Egypt.

According to a foreign ministry statement, in a Saturday telephone conversation, Fahmy informed German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle of “developments that followed the formation of the transitional government” and the “formation of a committee of experts on proposing amendments to the 2012 constitution.”

Fahmy also reiterated the “commitment of the government to implementing the roadmap agreed upon by political forces.”

Germany has called for Morsi to be released over fears of “political persecution of any kind.” German ambassador to Egypt Michael Bock last week called to allow “access” to Morsi. A diplomatic source from the Egyptian ministry and the German embassy media relations manager were unable to confirm if Fahmy and Westerwelle discussed this issue.

Westerwelle also “expressed his country’s appreciation for Egypt and the close traditional ties between the two countries and hoped for success of the transitional stage,” said the ministry statement.

Fahmy, the former minister Mohamed Kamel Amr and other ministry officials have been in contact with representatives from countries around the world to convey the “correct and proper image” of events in Egypt. This includes a diplomatic tour by foreign ministry diplomats to African nations following the African Union Peace and Security Council’s decision to freeze Egypt’s membership.
