Egypt’s New Zealand embassy urges nationals to be vigilant after mosque attack

The Egyptian Embassy in New Zealand urged members of the Egyptian community in the country to stay vigilant and to be far away from crowded places in the wake of an armed attack on two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch.

The embassy mourned the victims of the terror attack. The embassy asserted that it is in constant contact with New Zealand’s police and interior ministry to be posted on names and nationalities of the dead as well as to enhance security at gatherings of the Egyptian nationals.

Sky News channel said the death toll from the attack climbed to 40, while 20 others were wounded.

One of the attackers taken into custody was an Australian-born citizen, according to New Zealand police.

One shooting occurred at Al Noor mosque near Hagley Park in the city’s center at about 1:45pm (local time) during Friday prayers.

The second occurred at a mosque in the nearby suburb of Linwood.
