An Egyptian soldier and a police officer were shot dead on Monday, during two separate attacks in the northern Sinai Peninsula, an Egyptian security source said.

The source told Ma’an that gunmen, affiliated with the Sinai Province group, shot and a killed a police officer outside the officer’s home in el-Arish city.

The victim was shot in the head several times, according to the source.

Separately, the security sources said, an Egyptian soldier, who works at the Sheikh Zuweid city police station was shot in the head and killed by a long-range sniper.

Both victims were taken to a military hospital in al-Arish.

Egyptian military and police forces have been the target of ongoing attacks, which have increased since Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi took power from democratically-elected Muhammad Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013.

The Egyptian president came under attack, following his violent suppression of Muslim Brotherhood members, following his rise to power, which Sisi has argued is necessary, to deter future attacks in the Sinai and across Egypt.

A militant group responsible for a majority of attacks on military personnel, Beit Ansar al-Maqdis, aligned with the Islamic State group in Nov, 2014, changing its name to Sinai Province
