Egyptian mummies seized were to be examined

The ancient Egyptian mummies caught ahead of being smuggled to Belgium were to be examined before being offered for sale, a mummies preservation expert at the Ministry of Antiquities said.

Rania Ahmed told MENA on Saturday that the mummies should have been observed and dated in Egypt before any sale operation.

After seizing the mummies at Cairo International Airport, the secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities formed an archaeological committee to examine them.

The official noted that those attempting to smuggle the artifacts wanted to make sure of the era in which they existed in order to sell them at the highest price.
