EGYPT GETS BACK NINE SMUGGLED ARTIFACT FROM FRANCE

CAIRO– The Egyptian authorities said on Thursday that they have recovered nine smuggled artifact from France, Xinhua news agency reported.

A statement by the Ministry of Antiquities said the artifact were parts of five coffins, two statues of cats, a human head made of basalt, and a pharaonic mask made of wood.

”The nine artifact will be stored in the Egyptian Museum until they are fit for display after restoration work,’ the ministry said.

The cultural relics were handed over to the Egyptian embassy in Paris in 2017 after a final ruling by a French judge on the smuggling case in 2016.

French authorities seized the artifact from a train in Paris that was heading for England in 2012, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

France and Egypt have been collaborating to stop the trafficking of antiquities. In Nov 2014, France agreed to return 239 pieces of artifact to Egypt.
