EGYPT CONDOLES VICTIMS OF IRAN-IRAQ POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE

CAIRO, Egypt, Egypt expressed, on Monday, its sincere condolences, for the victims of the devastating earthquake, which killed over 400 people and injured thousands in both Iraq and Iran.

In a statement, The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, affirmed that Egypt stands with the peoples of Iraq and Iran, in such ordeal.

On Sunday, a huge earthquake measuring 7.3 magnitude, hit the border areas between Iraq and Iran, leaving eight Iraqis and at least 445 Iranians dead and thousands injured.

The quake’s epicentre was located approximately 32 km south of the city of Halabja, in a remote mountainous region of eastern Iraq, some 200 km north-east of Baghdad, and 400 km west of Tehran, according to the United States Geological Survey.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major fault lines that cover at least 90 percent of the country.

As a result, destructive earthquakes in Iran occur constantly.

The deadliest quake in Iran’s modern history happened in Jun, 1990. It destroyed the northern cities of Rudbar, Manjil, and Lushan, along with hundreds of villages, killing about 37,000 people.
