Canadian Senate speaker to visit Egypt within days

Speaker of the Senate of Canada George Furey is planned to pay an official visit to Egypt within the coming few days, a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry read on Tuesday 14/5/2019.

Furey will lead a delegation of Canada senators representing several political parties, it added.

Egyptian Ambassador in Ottawa Ahmed Abu Zeid met Furey earlier in the day to finalize arrangements for the official visit.

Furey’s agenda in Egypt includes meetings with Speaker of the House of Representatives Ali Abdel Aal, Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El Tayyeb and Bishop Daniel, the Secretary of the Holy Synod on behalf of Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria and Patriarch of St. Mark Diocese, who is on a visit to Germany.

He will also meet with Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Khalid Abdel Ghaffar and other senior officials.

The ambassador hailed the visit as the first high-level one between Cairo and Ottawa in many years.

The visit is expected to contribute to the promotion of Egyptian-Canadian relations in various aspects, especially in the field of parliamentary cooperation, he added.

It will give Furey a chance for a closer look at the positive developments witnessed by Egypt in various economic, social and political fields, he added.
