Cairo University to Ban Politically Active Student Groups

Cairo University will abolish student groups that are affiliated with political parties starting the new academic year, Gaber Nasser, university head, told a state-owned news channel on Sunday night.

“This decision aims at not transforming the university into a space for political and partisan conflicts,” Nasser said.

The new academic year will start within weeks.

At least 94 students were expelled from Cairo University throughout the past academic year.

The pro-Mohamed Mursi “Students against the coup” movement has been organising protests against the former Islamist president’s military ouster throughout the past year. Protests have often devolved into clashes with security forces.

The past academic year is the deadliest, with at least 16 students killed amid protests on campus, according to the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression’s Student Observatory.
