ASRT chief: EGP 23.5 bn allocated to fund research, scientific projects

President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology Mahmoud Saqr said scientific research has witnessed a notable progress thanks to the support of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, noting that EGP 23.5 billion has been allocated to fund research and scientific projects in this year’s budget.

In statements to MENA on Sunday on the occasion of Science Day, Saqr said this is the third time for President Sisi to honor scientists and researchers on this occasion, a matter which could give a strong boost to the scientific research system.

He also said that Egypt, according to the Global Innovation Index (GII) for 2019, Egypt ranks 92nd among 129 countries, climbing up 15 ranks over the past four years.

Saqr also unveiled the outcome of scientific research in the various fields such a mega project on the solar power condensers and their applications in the city of Borg el Arab. The project is funded by 9.5 million euros from the European Union, with Egypt affording a sum of euros 2.4 million, he said. It is considered the biggest research center in the North of Africa region, he added.

Another project on the development of solar cells was established in south Egypt in cooperation between the Egyptian government and China, Saqr explained.

As per the desalination of water, Saqr noted that a national alliance was established to beef the national industry of water desalination with an annual fund of EGP 10 million. Saqr also unveiled other projects in the fields of agriculture, food and environment protection in cooperation with Zuweil City of Science.
