President of Al Azhar University Mohamed el-Maharsawi said that Egypt’s pride of belonging to Africa has greatly contributed to the fruitful cooperation among the African countries in the various domains.

Giving a speech on Tuesday 12/3/2019 at the opening of the permanent regional office of the North African Association of African Universities (AAU), Maharsawi said Al Azhar is not a local or regional institution, but an international institution, where more than 33,000 students from all over the world are studying.

Al Azhar paid attention to all incoming students from African countries, he said, noting that there are 5,000 African students studied at Al Azhar University.

For his part, AAU President Orlando Antonio Quilambo conveyed his greetings to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi for Egypt’s presidency of the African Union.

The inauguration of the North African AAU regional office in Egypt is a great opportunity to develop education in the African continent, Quilambo added.

On Friday, Al Azhar University lighted the torch of the first youth Olympics of the Association of African Universities, held under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Al Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El Tayyeb.
