AfCFTA key African achievement: Assistant FM

Assistant Foreign Minister For African Affairs Abu Bakr Hefny underscored the importance of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) that has come into force recently as one of the key achievements attained in the continent.

He described the move a significant step towards the path of African unity that was launched by the founders of the African Union.

The senior diplomat was addressing a current workshop co-organized by the Foreign Ministry’s Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD) and Al Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies.

The workshop, which addresses the role of media in supporting Africa’s sustainable development, falls within the framework of a program designated for senior chief editors and media persons.

Africa will never achieve progress without economic unity, Hefny said, pointing to the underway negotiations on the completion of the African economic unity system.

He highlighted the importance of having maritime, air and land transport networks linking African countries.

Hefny pointed out to the role journalism plays in briefing peoples on the achievements realized and the importance of the 2063 in attaining development in Africa.

EAPD Secretary General Ahmed Shaheen, meanwhile, asserted the role of media in achieving development and countering terrorism and extremist thought.

Since its inception in May 2014, the EAPD held 300 training courses attended by over 10,000 trainees from all African countries, Shaheen said.

The workshop’s goal is to tackle the role of media in promoting African relations and African economic integration, supporting social media, stepping up security cooperation and raising awareness about extremist ideologies.
