Polls Open for Second Day in Presidential Election

Egyptians continued voting on Tuesday in a two-day presidential election in which former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi are competing.

Polling stations will be opened until 10.00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Egypt’s Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab announced late on Monday that Tuesday is an official holiday for public servants to give them the chance to cast their votes.

This is the second presidential election Egypt has seen in the past three years since the ouster of autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

A Muslim Brotherhood president elected in 2012 was overthrown by the army last year in response to mass demonstrations against his rule.

Sisi gained wide popularity following Mursi’s ouster and is expected to win this election.
