Obama Welcomes Egypt’s Initiative to Stop Fighting in Gaza

US President Barack Obama welcomed an initiative floated by Egypt to stop all acts of aggression in the Gaza Strip.

Speaking at an Iftar banquet to mark the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Obama said the US will continue efforts to push for a return to the 2012 ceasefire.

“We are encouraged that Egypt has made a proposal to accomplish this goal, which we hope can restore the calm that we’ve been seeking,” he said.

“I will say very clearly, no country can accept rocket fired indiscriminately at citizens,” Obama said.

“And so, we’ve been very clear that Israel has the right to defend itself against what I consider to be inexcusable attacks from Hamas,” he noted.

“At the same time, on top of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza that we’ve worked long and hard to alleviate, the death and injury of Palestinian civilians is a tragedy, which is why we’ve emphasized the need to protect civilians, regardless of who they are or where they live,” he added.

On Monday 1472014, Egypt launched an initiative to stop the Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people.

The initiative urges an immediate ceasefire and stopping all hostilities from both sides.

According to the initiative, the ceasefire will go into effect on Tuesday 1572014 at 6:00 (GMT) between Hamas and Israel with no prior conditions.
