Interior Ministry – Smugglers Kill Security Officer in Rafah

A national security officer was killed on Thursday night by smugglers at a border point in North Sinai’s Rafah, Egypt’s Interior Ministry said on Friday.

A band of smugglers opened fire on a security force tasked with securing a border point, injuring a lieutenant and two conscripts in the process, the ministry said in a statement.

The lieutenant died of a gunshot wound in the neck, according to the statement posted on the ministry’s Facebook page.

One conscript was shot in the hand and the other in the foot.

In its statement, the ministry affirmed the continuous efforts of its elements to combat crime and achieve security and stability.

Militants in Sinai have intensified their attacks on police and military targets since former President Mohamed Mursi was deposed last July.
