FM – Egypt Bulwark Against Plans Aiming to Break Up Region

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has accused Hamas, Qatar and Turkey of trying to undermine the Egyptian role in the region, which is “the bulwark against plans that aim to break up the region into small warring countries.”

Speaking about the Gaza-Israel crisis during an Iftar banquet he held to chief editors of public and private newspapers, the Minister asserted that if Hamas had accepted the Egyptian truce initiative, tens of innocent lives could have been saved. He pointed out that the relations with Hamas were strained due to its ideology which Egypt rejects.

“However, we deal with Hamas for the interest of the Palestinian people,” the Minister added.

Assistants to the foreign minister and Foreign Ministry Spokesman Badr Abdel-Atti attended the banquet.
