FM – Efforts Should Be Focused On Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri said that all Arab countries’ efforts should be focused on the return to the Palestine-Israel truce and seeking an immediate halt to Israeli military operations in Gaza.

Speaking at the Arab League’s emergency foreign ministers meeting here to tackle the Gaza crisis, Shoukri said the Israeli attack on civilians would hinder any attempts to bring peace to the region.

The top diplomat asserted that Egypt has conducted high-level contacts with all key players in the crisis, regionally and internationally.

He added that Egypt has floated an initiative that aims at stopping all the hostilities and opening all Israeli crossings.

The enforcement of the initiative starts immediately after the two sides commit to halting all hostilities, he underlined.

Egypt will hold contacts that will be followed by talks between the Palestinian and Israeli sides to retain the ceasefire agreement and continue confidence-building measures, he added.

In order to be fruitful, peace talks between Palestine and Israel should be held within a specified timeframe and under international auspices, Shoukri pointed out.

Shoukri also affirmed that the Palestinian cause has always topped Egypt’s priorities as it is the Arab’s core issue.

He also reviewed Egypt’s humanitarian aid to the Palestinians and the opening of the Egypt-Gaza Rafah crossing to receive Palestinians injured due to the Israeli military escalation in Gaza.

“I am looking forward to your support for the Egyptian initiative, which goes in line with main purpose of this meeting,” he told the gathering.
