First Arab Union for Awqaf Announced, Headed By Egypt

Awqaf Minister Mohamed Gomaa announced on Tuesday 2052014 the establishment of the first Arab Union for Awqaf under the umbrella of the Council of Arab Economic Unity of the Arab League.

The newly-announced union will be based in Egypt.

The move came in response to an initiative by Egypt and was welcomed by all Arab countries, the minister said.

Gomaa was named head of the union and chairman of the Egyptian Awqaf Authority Salah el-Gindy was chosen the union’s secretary general.

During the union’s constituent meeting, the participating Arab ministers from Mauritania, Palestine, Jordan, Kuwait and Yemen agreed on selecting Egypt to chair the union in appreciation of its role in the Arab and Islamic worlds.

The union aims at managing and investing funds of the Arab Awqaf authorities in development projects and creating joint companies in the different economic sectors.
