Fahmy Holds Contacts With Counterparts, UN Chief On Regional Issues

Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy had made phone calls with his Russian, UAE and Sudanese counterparts and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to fellow up regional developments.

During the phone conversations, Fahmy underlined Egypt’s support for the unity of Libya and the need to end division, Foreign Ministry spokesman Badr Abdel-Atti said.

Fahmy is leading efforts to hold ministerial consultations on the situation in Libya in the presence of neighboring countries on the sidelines of a ministerial conference of the Non-Aligned Movement scheduled next week in Algeria, the spokesman said.

His talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed and UN Chief Ban Ki-moon took up the latest developments in Syria and the need to find a political solution to the crisis to ensure the unity of the country and achieve its people’s aspirations, Abdel-Atti said.

He also discussed with Lavrov the Palestinian-Israeli relations and efforts to resume peace talks.

Fahmy underlined Egypt’s commitment to the terms of reference of the peace process and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital within the 1967 borders.

The four officials Fahmy had contacted stressed the importance of coordinating with Egypt on the different developments in the region.
