Egypt Welcomes Ceasefire Deal Between South Sudan Govt, Armed Opposition

Egypt welcomed on Sunday the ceasefire deal brokered between South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar in Addis Ababa on Friday.

In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry hoped the deal will stem bloodshed in South Sudan and would be the start of a new stage where peace and stability prevail.

Violence in the world’s youngest country broke out between government and rebel troops in December, killing thousands of people and forcing more than 1.3 million to flee their homes.

The statement urged regional and international sides to help both parties in South Sudan honor their pledges to cease fire and resume efforts to build state institutions.

A similar ceasefire in January fell apart after days of application.

Meanwhile, Egypt confirmed its participation in the international conference of South Sudan donors that will be held in Oslo on May 20.
