Egypt Opens Gaza Crossing for Wounded Palestinians

Egypt opened its border crossing with the Gaza Strip on Thursday, allowing injured Palestinians who seek medical treatment into the country, an Egyptian security source said.

Palestinians who were wounded in recent Israeli air strikes will receive treatment at Sinai, Suez and Ismailia hospitals, the source told Aswat Masriya. He added that patients who need surgical operations will be transferred to Cairo.

At least 66 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s bombing raid, more than 50 of them civilians, Gaza medical officials said.

Israel has described its strike as a possibly prolonged attack on Palestinian militants in response to Hamas rockets on Israeli cities.

The attacks started one day after the bodies of three missing Israeli teenagers were found dead in the occupied West Bank, who Israel said were kidnapped and killed by Islamist group Hamas.

Egypt declared an emergency state on the border with Gaza on Wednesday following the airstrikes.

The Rafah crossing is considered the main window to the world for Gaza Strip’s 1.7 million Palestinians.
