Egypt Hosts Reconciliation Talks Between Palestinian Factions

Egypt will begin on Wednesday two-day talks between the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah faction over a range of key issues including control of Gaza.

Gaza ceasefire talks between the Palestinians and Israel, which are mediated by Egypt resumed on Tuesday as both sides presented their demands and agreed to look into them by the end of October.

Egypt announced on August 26 reaching a ceasefire agreement within the Gaza strip, ending a war that has left 2139 Palestinians killed and over 11,100 injured. On the Israeli side sixty-four soldiers and six civilians were killed.

The ceasefire included conditions that the Palestinian Authority, Fatah, should take over civil administration in Gaza from Hamas.

But tensions were raised between Hamas and Fatah over a dispute that the Palestinian Authority has not been paying salaries to Gaza’s public sector workers.
