Egypt Chairs Nuclear Disarmament Debate in Geneva

Egypt chaired an unofficial event that discussed the nuclear disarmament on the sidelines of the disarmament conference in Geneva.

Walid Mahmoud Abdel-Nasser, the permanent representative of Egypt to the United Nations Office at Geneva, said 65 countries including the five UN Security Council permanent members will participate.

The debates will last for three days as part of the international efforts to boost the role of the UN disarmament conference, he said.

“We are seeking to launch negotiations that could lead to an international nuclear disarmament agreement in the world,” he said.

He expressed hope that the ongoing debates will break the stalemate besting the conference since 1996 and lead to tangible steps towards the disarmament issue.
