Doctor Walks Free After Girl Dies from Genital Cutting

An Egyptian court has acquitted the first doctor ever brought to trial in Egypt on female genital mutilation charges that resulted in the death of 13-year-old Sohair al-Batarsquoa, according a href=”http:egyptianstreets.com20141120doctor-acquitted-after-13-year-old-egyptian-girl-dies-from-female-genital-mutilation” target=”_blank”Egyptian Streetsa.

The doctor and the girl’s father were a href=”http:allafrica.comstories201405221048.html” target=”_blank”both on trial after she died in June 2013a at Raslan Halawarsquos private medical clinic while undergoing the operation at her fatherrsquos request.

“The story unfolded when the victim’s father filed a complaint, accusing the doctor of killing his daughter after performing an FGM operation,” said Mona Amin, the general coordinator of National Population Council’s national project for banning FGM.
