Activist Fined 1,000 EGP for Poster That Offends Sisi

A political activist, who was detained for 24 hours for carrying a poster that says President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is a “liar” in protest against rising petrol prices, was released on Tuesday.

Mohamed Nassar, who was fined 1,000 Egyptian pounds, was convicted with breaking the protest law and encouraging citizens to protest against the raise in petrol prices.

Nassar was carrying the poster in Talaat Harb Square in downtown when he was arrested on Monday. The banner roughly translated to, “You promised not to lift subsidies and you turned out to be a liar, Mr. President.”

The activist has denied all charges.

The Egyptian government increased fuel prices on Saturday by up to 75 percent in an effort to decrease the budget deficit and reduce an economic burden that has increased in the past three years due to political turmoil.
